SS Student Awarded for Actions to Protect His Family

As daylight savings time rolls around, most of us remember the fire prevention phrase “Change your clock; Change your battery.”  Fire prevention efforts are top of mind for Sioux Falls School District students thanks to a strong partnership with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.

SFFR visits classrooms and provides prevention information to thousands of students each year.  Recently, firefighters spoke to a class at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School.  There, firefighters told students about the importance of having working smoke detectors in every home.  They told students to look for their smoke detector in their home and make sure it was working.  If they couldn’t find a working smoke detector, they were instructed to call 211 and Sioux Falls firefighters would come out to install alarms for free.

Adi Elmamouni didn’t find working detectors in his home so he told his mom about the opportunity.  She contacted 211 and the firefighters were happy to respond, saying they would much rather take the time to install smoke detectors than have to respond to a fire where someone could potentially be injured, or worse yet, die because they were not alerted to a fire in the home.

Friday, Adi was honored with a surprise visit and an award for his actions – taking an important step to keep his family safe.  SFSD is grateful for the partnership of Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.  Their classroom presentation made a huge impact on Adi.  He shared the information with his mother, and in turn, one more Sioux Falls home is now covered by working smoke alarms.  SFSD encourages all families to check their smoke detectors.  Call 211 if need new alarms installed.
